Ethan DeLair, “Calm in the Storm”, 2019, 12”x16”, May 2019
I was inspired by Claude-Joseph Vernet’s depiction of a seascape, in which storms cover most of the sky except a small patch of sunlight on a single object, and by Mont Saint Michel, an island commune just off the French coast. It rises out of the water, a small, fortified spot surrounded by a massive ocean. Both of these ideas represent my idea of home as a shelter from a large, unkind world. The clouds and ocean appear turbulent and transparent, the castle opaque and unmoving, a symbol of home.
